On 13 August 2026, an awareness and study programme on mangrove ecosystems was conducted for the international university students who had joined the Lanka Mangrove Museum and Learning Centre as volunteers.

The programme provided the students with an opportunity to learn about the importance of mangrove ecosystems, their ecological value, biodiversity, and the importance of mangrove conservation and restoration.

The students also participated in a practical study of mangroves, allowing them to gain first-hand experience and a better understanding of mangrove plants and their natural environment.

This programme provided a valuable opportunity for the international volunteers to connect their academic knowledge with practical field experience while learning about Sri Lanka’s mangrove ecosystems and conservation efforts.

On 07 August 2026, the Lanka Mangrove Museum and Learning Center warmly welcomed a group of 21 students and three academic staff members from the Department of Aquaculture and Aquatic Resources Management, University College of Anuradhapura, University of Vocational Technology (UNIVOTEC). The educational field visit was organized as part of the NVQ Level 5 academic programme, providing students with an opportunity to gain practical knowledge of Sri Lanka’s unique mangrove ecosystems.

The Lanka Mangrove Museum and Learning Centre is pleased to welcome a group of international university students who have joined the museum as volunteers to support its environmental conservation and education initiatives. The students, representing The Netherlands, Taiwan, Japan, and Türkiye, will contribute their knowledge, enthusiasm, and cultural diversity while gaining valuable hands-on experience in mangrove ecosystem conservation.

School students from Paduwasnuwara visited the Lanka Mangrove Museum and Learning Center to gain a deeper understanding of mangrove ecosystems, biodiversity, and environmental conservation. During their visit, the students explored the museum exhibits and participated in educational sessions that highlighted the ecological importance of mangroves and the need for their conservation.

Today, we were delighted to welcome a group of students from Gateway International School, Colombo to the Lanka Mangrove Museum & Learning Center for an educational field visit.

During their visit, the students explored the museum’s exhibits and learned about the importance of mangrove ecosystems, their rich biodiversity, the vital role mangroves play in protecting coastal environments, and the need for their conservation. The interactive sessions and guided tour provided an engaging learning experience, inspiring students to become future stewards of the environment.

International Mangrove Day Awareness Programme for School Students and Young Scouts

On 18 July 2026, in celebration of International Mangrove Day, the Lanka Mangrove Museum & Learning Center organized an environmental awareness programme for school students and young scouts.

The programme focused on the importance of mangrove ecosystems, their role in protecting coastal environments, conserving biodiversity, and mitigating the impacts of climate change. Through interactive sessions and educational activities, participants gained valuable knowledge on the importance of conserving mangroves and protecting Sri Lanka’s coastal ecosystems.

Continuing her six-week educational and research journey at the Lanka Mangrove Museum and Learning Center, the young volunteer from India participated in an educational session focused on mangrove plants and their importance.

During the session, she was introduced to the unique characteristics of mangrove species, their adaptations to coastal environments, and the important ecological services provided by mangrove ecosystems. The session included discussions on mangrove diversity, conservation methods, and the role of these valuable coastal forests in protecting biodiversity and supporting coastal communities.

Students from Grades 4, 5, 10, and 11 of Madampe Muslim School visited the Lanka Mangrove Museum and Learning Center for an educational programme. During their visit, the students explored the museum exhibits, learned about the importance of mangrove ecosystems, biodiversity conservation, and environmental protection.

The educational sessions provided valuable knowledge about the role of mangroves in protecting coastal areas, supporting wildlife, and mitigating climate change. The students actively participated in discussions and gained a deeper understanding of the need to conserve these unique ecosystems for future generations.

The Lanka Mangrove Museum warmly welcomed an international volunteer from India on 27 May 2026. The volunteer has joined a six-week educational and research program organized through AIESEC’s “Rooted” Project.

During the program, the participant will engage in various activities related to mangrove conservation, environmental education, and sustainable ecosystem management. The volunteer will work closely with the museum team, gaining practical knowledge and contributing to ongoing conservation and awareness initiatives.
