Mangrove Awareness Programme Held at Lanka Mangrove Museum

05th June 2025, Pambala – In celebration of World Environment Day, the Department of Coast Conservation and Coastal Resource Management organized a special Mangrove Awareness Programme on June 5th, 2025. The event was held in the auditorium of the Lanka Mangrove Museum, a key center for environmental education and conservation in Sri Lanka.

The programme brought together 30 university students from Wayamba University and 10 staff members from the Department of Coast Conservation and Coastal Resource Management. The primary objective was to raise awareness on the ecological significance of mangroves and promote sustainable practices in coastal conservation.

Participants engaged in educational sessions, multimedia presentations, and discussions facilitated by environmental experts. Key topics included the role of mangroves in coastal protection, their function as biodiversity hotspots, and their importance in carbon sequestration.

Following the indoor sessions, attendees explored the Lanka Mangrove Museum’s exhibits, gaining hands-on insights into mangrove ecosystems, conservation history, and ongoing restoration projects in the Pambala Lagoon and surrounding areas.

The event not only strengthened the participants’ knowledge but also inspired greater responsibility and action towards environmental conservation. Both the university students and departmental staff left with a renewed commitment to protect and advocate for Sri Lanka’s vital mangrove habitats.

The Department of Coast Conservation and Coastal Resource Management emphasized its dedication to continuing such collaborative efforts with universities and conservation institutions, as part of a broader mission to preserve the nation’s coastal ecosystems.
