Workshop on Mangrove Conservation and Food Production Using Discarded Fish

A special awareness and capacity-building program was conducted for the women’s groups in the surrounding areas and in Mune, Kandakkuliya, under the theme “Mangrove Conservation and Food Production Using Discarded Fish.”

Objectives of the Program:

  • To economically empower local women,

  • To raise awareness about the importance of conserving mangrove ecosystems,

  • And to provide hands-on training on how to turn bycatch (discarded fish) into value-added food products.

Program Highlights:

  • A presentation on the ecological importance of mangrove forests

  • Basic guidance on accounting and small business management

  • A live demonstration on producing simple food products (e.g., dried fish mix, fish cutlets) using discarded fish

  • Group discussions on business ideas for women entrepreneurs

  • Interactive sessions and Q&A time

Outcomes of the Workshop:

  • Increased female participation and engagement

  • New ideas gained in food production using underutilized resources

  • Greater community support and understanding for mangrove conservation

This program was carried out with the direct support of environmental organizations, local government officials, and women’s community-based organizations in the area.
