A significant step towards empowering local women was taken at the Kandakulia and Mandalkudawa GN Divisions through a specialized awareness program focused on sustainable food production. The initiative, which aimed to educate women on producing food from discarded fish, highlighted the potential of turning waste into a valuable source of income.
The program, led by Ms. K.D. Vijitha, Grama Niladhari of Kandakulia GN Division, and Mr. Duglas Thesera, Director of LMM, provided participants with practical knowledge on utilizing discarded fish, an often overlooked resource, to create nutritious food products. This initiative not only promotes sustainable practices but also opens up new avenues for financial independence among local women.
The workshop was well-attended, with the presence of key officials including the Kalpitiya Forest Officer and the Public Affairs Officer from the Puttalam District Secretariat, who lent their support and expertise to the program.
The event marks a significant milestone in the ongoing efforts to uplift the women of both GN Divisions by equipping them with the skills and knowledge needed to contribute to their households and communities economically. This initiative underscores the importance of sustainability and resourcefulness in addressing both environmental and social challenges in the region.
