Canadian Scholar and Ocean University Student Focus on Mangroves and Eco-Tourism for PhD Research
June 12, 2026 – Sri Lanka Mangrove Museum and Learning Centre
A doctoral research scholar from Canada, Ms. Katharina, together with a student from the Ocean University of Sri Lanka, visited the Sri Lanka Mangrove Museum and Learning Centre on June 12, 2026, to conduct an observational study focused on mangrove conservation and eco-tourism.
The primary objective of the visit was to collect data and information for Ms. Katharina’s PhD research, which explores the relationship between mangrove ecosystem conservation and sustainable eco-tourism development. Working in collaboration with the Ocean University of Sri Lanka, the research aims to identify effective ways of protecting mangrove habitats while promoting environmentally responsible tourism opportunities.
During their visit, the researchers explored the diverse mangrove ecosystems surrounding the museum and engaged in discussions on conservation practices, biodiversity protection, community participation, and the role of eco-tourism in supporting sustainable development. The Sri Lanka Mangrove Museum and Learning Centre provided valuable technical knowledge, educational resources, and field-based insights to support the study.
Ms. Katharina also revealed plans to utilize the information gathered during this research to develop a special international media campaign aimed at raising awareness about the global importance of mangrove ecosystems and the need for sustainable tourism practices.
“Sri Lanka’s mangrove ecosystem is remarkably unique. My goal is to showcase to the world how these habitats can contribute to boosting tourism without harming the environment,” said Ms. Katharina.
This collaborative research visit highlights the growing international interest in Sri Lanka’s mangrove conservation efforts and is expected to contribute significantly to enhancing global recognition of the country’s sustainable tourism and environmental protection initiatives.
