International University Students Join Lanka Mangrove Museum as Volunteers for Mangrove Conservation

The Lanka Mangrove Museum and Learning Centre is pleased to welcome a group of international university students who have joined the museum as volunteers to support its environmental conservation and education initiatives. The students, representing The Netherlands, Taiwan, Japan, and Türkiye, will contribute their knowledge, enthusiasm, and cultural diversity while gaining valuable hands-on experience in mangrove ecosystem conservation.

As part of their volunteer programme, the students participated in a practical training session on mangrove nursery establishment and management. The training introduced them to the importance of mangrove ecosystems, the methods used to collect and prepare propagules, nursery maintenance techniques, and the best practices for producing healthy mangrove seedlings for future restoration projects.

The programme also provided an opportunity for the volunteers to understand Sri Lanka’s unique coastal ecosystems and the critical role mangroves play in protecting shorelines, supporting biodiversity, storing carbon, and sustaining local livelihoods. Through direct field experience, the students gained practical knowledge of mangrove restoration while working alongside the museum staff.

The Lanka Mangrove Museum and Learning Centre continues to serve as a leading centre for mangrove education, research, and conservation in Sri Lanka. The participation of international volunteers further strengthens its mission to inspire future environmental leaders and encourage collaborative action for the protection and restoration of mangrove ecosystems worldwide.
