Awareness Programme on Microplastics Held for Primary Students of Ch/ Vijaya Maha Vidyalaya at the Lanka Mangrove Museum

On July 17, 2025, the Lanka Mangrove Museum conducted a special awareness programme focused on the growing environmental concern of microplastics. The session was organized for the primary students of Ch/ Vijaya Maha Vidyalaya, Chilaw, with the aim of educating young minds about the dangers posed by microplastic pollution and its impact on marine ecosystems.

During the programme, students were introduced to the concept of microplastics—tiny plastic particles that result from the breakdown of larger plastic waste and are now widely found in oceans, rivers, and coastal areas. Through interactive discussions, visual presentations, and hands-on learning activities, the young participants learned how microplastics enter food chains and affect aquatic life, especially in delicate ecosystems like mangroves.

Museum staff emphasized the importance of reducing plastic use, proper waste disposal, and the role of individuals in protecting the environment. The session aimed not only to raise awareness but also to encourage responsible behavior and environmental stewardship from an early age.

The students showed great enthusiasm and curiosity throughout the session. Many expressed a keen interest in sharing what they learned with their families and taking action in their own schools and communities.

The Lanka Mangrove Museum continues to serve as an educational hub, promoting environmental awareness and conservation, especially among the younger generation. This programme was another successful step in building a more informed and eco-conscious future.
