Seacology and RTA Representatives Visit Lanka Mangrove Museum and Learning Center
Dr. Leela Batuwaththage, Country Representative of Seacology, and Mr. Duminda Punchihewa from RTA recently visited the Lanka Mangrove Museum and Learning Center. The visit aimed to assess the impact of the recent floods on the museum and to discuss the future direction and sustainability of this important conservation and education facility.
During their visit, Dr. Batuwaththage and Mr. Punchihewa engaged in a detailed discussion with the museum staff regarding the damages caused by the floods, which severely affected the museum infrastructure and exhibits. The flooding highlighted the vulnerability of coastal and wetland-based institutions to extreme weather events, emphasizing the urgent need for resilient planning and protective measures.
The discussion also focused on potential restoration efforts, mitigation strategies, and long-term development plans to ensure the continued operation of the museum. Special attention was given to strengthening the museum’s role in mangrove conservation, environmental education, and community engagement, despite the challenges posed by climate-related disasters.
The visit concluded with a shared commitment to support the recovery of the Lanka Mangrove Museum and to explore collaborative efforts that will safeguard its future as a vital center for environmental awareness, research, and conservation in Sri Lanka.
