Prof. Sudheera M. W. Ranwala and University of Colombo Students Visit Lanka Mangrove Museum

On July 16, 2025, Prof. Sudheera M. W. Ranwala from the Department of Plant Sciences, University of Colombo, visited the Lanka Mangrove Museum accompanied by a group of undergraduate students. The visit formed part of their academic exposure to wetland ecosystems and plant biodiversity, with a specific focus on mangrove environments.

During the visit, the group was welcomed by the museum’s staff and given a comprehensive tour of the exhibits that detail the ecological significance, species diversity, and conservation importance of mangroves in Sri Lanka. The exhibits served as a living classroom, helping students connect textbook knowledge with real-world conservation practices.

Prof. Ranwala, a leading expert in plant sciences and environmental conservation, engaged in meaningful discussions with the museum’s education team. These discussions touched on topics such as mangrove ecology, habitat restoration, carbon sequestration, and the role of community participation in conservation efforts.

Students were particularly interested in understanding the adaptive features of mangrove species, their ecological interactions, and the threats posed by human activities. A highlight of the visit was the field tour to the lagoon area, where students observed various mangrove species thriving in their natural habitat and recorded field data for academic use.

This visit not only strengthened the students’ academic foundation but also emphasized the importance of preserving sensitive coastal ecosystems through research, education, and policy advocacy.

The Lanka Mangrove Museum was honored by the visit of Prof. Sudheera M. W. Ranwala and his students, and looks forward to continued collaboration with the University of Colombo in advancing environmental education and conservation efforts.
