Nurturing Young Environmental Stewards through Education and Field Experience
On 17 January 2026, members of the “Together With Mangroves” Children and Youth Environmental Society participated in their routine Saturday session at the Lanka Mangrove Museum and Learning Center. The programme was designed to combine learning, creativity, and hands-on experience, fostering a deeper understanding of nature and conservation among young participants.
The day began with a study programme focused on environmental awareness, tailored to suit different age groups. Following this session, an art contest was organized for children under five years of age, encouraging them to express their understanding of nature and mangroves through creativity.
After the educational activities, participants gathered in the auditorium to watch a video documentary on biodiversity and the importance of protecting mangrove ecosystems. The documentary helped the children and youth gain a clearer understanding of the rich life supported by mangroves and the crucial role these ecosystems play in environmental balance.
In the evening, the programme concluded with a field visit to the Pambala Lagoon area. During this visit, participants observed animals living among mangroves and learned about their habitats and interactions within the ecosystem. This hands-on experience strengthened their connection to nature and reinforced the lessons learned throughout the day.
Such regular sessions play a vital role in shaping environmentally responsible future generations, while promoting awareness, curiosity, and respect for Sri Lanka’s valuable mangrove ecosystems.
