Educational Visit by Mahanuwara Gothami Balika Vidyalaya to the Lanka Mangrove Museum
29th July 2025
On the 29th of July 2025, the Lanka Mangrove Museum welcomed a vibrant group of 254 students and 40 teachers from Mahanuwara Gothami Balika Vidyalaya. The visiting students, ranging from grades 6 to 9, were given a unique opportunity to explore the museum’s exhibits and gain a deeper understanding of Sri Lanka’s precious mangrove ecosystems.
The girls enthusiastically observed the preserved mangrove fish species of Sri Lanka, displayed in neatly labeled specimen jars (as seen in the photos). This section sparked great curiosity, with students closely examining the wide variety of aquatic life adapted to the mangrove environment.
The museum’s natural history displays—featuring shell collections, plant samples, and informative posters—also drew considerable attention. In one area, the girls were seen attentively reading descriptions and making notes, a testament to their interest in marine biodiversity and conservation.
What made the visit particularly engaging was the museum’s glass-walled layout, which allowed the students to enjoy direct views of the surrounding mangrove forest while exploring the indoor exhibits. This immersive setting helped them visualize the natural habitat of the species they were studying.
Throughout the visit, the teachers and students actively interacted with the museum guides, asking questions and participating in educational discussions about the importance of mangrove ecosystems in coastal protection, biodiversity conservation, and climate resilience.
The Lanka Mangrove Museum staff expressed their appreciation for the visit, noting the students’ discipline and enthusiasm. The day concluded with group reflections on the need for environmental stewardship and the crucial role young learners play in protecting Sri Lanka’s natural heritage.
This visit was not only educational but also inspiring, planting seeds of awareness and responsibility in the minds of future conservationists.
