Central Environmental Authority and Lanka Mangrove Museum Conduct Awareness Program for Environmental Police Officers in Puttalam District

An awareness program aimed at enhancing environmental knowledge and enforcement capacity was successfully conducted on 12th July 2025 by the Central Environmental Authority (CEA) in collaboration with the Lanka Mangrove Museum. The session was specifically organized for Environmental Police Officers in the Puttalam District, bringing together law enforcement personnel committed to protecting Sri Lanka’s natural ecosystems.

The program took place at the Lanka Mangrove Museum premises and focused on the conservation of mangrove ecosystems, the legal frameworks surrounding environmental protection, and the practical challenges officers face in the field. Officers were guided through the museum’s exhibits, which offer insight into the ecological importance of mangroves, their role in climate resilience, and the ongoing threats they face due to human activities.

Resource persons from both the Central Environmental Authority and the museum facilitated interactive discussions on topics such as coastal conservation laws, illegal mangrove clearing, and sustainable community engagement. The officers were also educated on recent policy developments and how to apply legal tools effectively in their daily enforcement duties.

In addition to classroom-style learning, participants had the opportunity to explore the lagoon area, observing mangroves in their natural habitat. This hands-on component helped contextualize theoretical knowledge and deepened their understanding of the urgent need for mangrove protection in the Puttalam region.

The awareness program highlighted the importance of inter-agency collaboration in environmental conservation. It also reinforced the vital role Environmental Police Officers play in safeguarding Sri Lanka’s coastal ecosystems.

The Lanka Mangrove Museum and the Central Environmental Authority extend their sincere appreciation to the officers who participated and reaffirm their commitment to continued collaboration for a greener and more sustainable Sri Lanka.
