On the 1st of August 2025, a group of enthusiastic students from Karavitagara Vidyalaya, Chilaw, embarked on an educational journey to the Lanka Mangrove Museum. The visit aimed to enrich the students’ understanding of mangrove ecosystems and their critical role in environmental conservation.

The program commenced with an interactive awareness session held in the museum auditorium. The students attentively listened as the museum’s Educational Officer explained the importance of mangroves in protecting coastal areas, preventing soil erosion, and supporting marine biodiversity. The large glass panels of the auditorium allowed the students to observe the surrounding mangrove environment, making the session even more engaging and immersive.

Following the awareness session, the students eagerly explored the museum’s exhibits. They examined preserved marine specimens and various mangrove species displayed in glass jars, sparking curiosity and lively discussions among them. The hands-on learning experience helped the students to connect theoretical knowledge from their classrooms with real-world environmental issues.

Teachers accompanying the students emphasized how visits like these are vital for fostering environmental responsibility among the younger generation. The museum staff were equally impressed by the students’ enthusiasm and active participation.

This field visit not only enhanced the students’ academic knowledge but also inspired them to become advocates for mangrove conservation in their communities. The Lanka Mangrove Museum continues to play a pivotal role in educating the future custodians of our environment.
