Second Day of making small mangrove nursery from “Together with Mangroves” Youth Society Members.
Today the Youth Society members have actively engaged to make the mangrove nursery beds at the Lanka Mangrove Museum premises. They have done the tasks as follows;
- Going to get the mud – filled nursery bags to the nursery beds
- Prepare, clean and arranged the nursery beds to keep the mud pots.
- Planted the propagules and mangrove seeds in the nursery pots under the guidance of museum director. They planted 04 mangroves species as;
- Rhizophora mucronata (Sinhala Name: Maha Kadol)
- Rhizophora apiculata (Sinhala Name: Maha Kadol)
- Nypa fruticans (Sinhala Name: Gin Pol)
- Avicennia Officinalis (Sinhala Name: Manda)
- Name each mangrove nursery bed from the planted mangrove species.
The museum staff supported the propagule and seed collection and stored them temporarily for use until today, and the museum director gave advice to kids on nursery bed preparation, mangrove propagules, and the plantation process. Not only that, after planting the propagules and seeds, he also encouraged and gave advice to the kids about taking care of the nursery beds.
According to that, the youngsters make 4 nursery beds with 50 mangrove nursery pots. The abovementioned mangrove species are the exsited mangrove propagules in this season. There are 22 mangrove species in Sri Lanka, and the museum expects to make nursery beds from other mangrove species with the youth members. The happiest thing was that the youth members actively engaged in this work and enjoyed it well.
